From Macro to Nano: How to Run a 3rd World Disinformation Troll Farm for Fun and Profit
In the 2022 Philippine National Elections, the widespread distribution of disinformation was heavily used by campaign teams to further their candidates' agenda and to attack their opponents through a network of professional 'troll' accounts on various social media platforms. Let's explore how they did this.
Studies show that social media penetration in the Philippines is 82.4% in 2023, with 92.05 million users spending an average of 4 hours and 6 minutes daily, on platforms such as Facebook, Youtube, Tiktok, and Twitter. It is this backdrop of internet user behavior that has been exploited by political campaigns since 2010, and the practice has evolved over the last 12 years into organized networks with more malevolent tactics. By relying on the spread of disinformation, these networks prey on voters’ emotions over discernment at the expense of a sane democratic process.
This talk explores the emergence of troll farms as engines of disinformation, the structure of these networks, and the economic flow within this insidious version of the gig economy.
