Making art out of natural formations with Geographic Information Systems(GIS)

Bits&Bäume Workshops
Rowan van der Kaaden
This workshop is meant to equip the participants with the knowledge and skills to extract the beauty of nature out of geographical data using QGIS.
Only prerequisites for this workshop are a computer with QGIS installed: https://qgis.org/en/site/ Data and instructions will be provided. No pre-existing knowledge or experience needed! "It seems to me that the natural world is the greatest source of excitement; the greatest source of visual beauty; the greatest source of intellectual interest. It is the greatest source of so much in life that makes life worth living." - David Attenborough The natural formations that are visible when we analyze geographical data are beautiful and would go to waste if not seen by more people. We will start by briefly going over some of the fundamentals of GIS, what it is, what it is used for, and some of the fundamental concepts and terms. Then, we shall go over the software we are working with (QGIS), how to use the interface and what tools are available to us. And then we'll put it to use! We'll use QGIS to extract some form of natural formation, such as animal richness in an area, soil type distribution, or slope levels. These can in turn put to use in other projects, to make cool visualizations for on clothing, or a wall-mounted piece that is laser cut or CNC milled.

## What Play a round of our FOSS funding programme with us and test our new focus "sufficiency". Since 2020, we support open source public-interest-tech projects in Switzerland with [our Prototype Fund](https://prototypefund.opendata.ch/). ## Why Global greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise, sufficiency and systemic innovation must also play a central role in the context of digitalisation. From 2023/24 onwards, we will therefore fund two projects per year in the field of "sufficiency" to ...

We can replace the operating system of an Android phone when we have the necessary hardware drivers. Using NixOS as the operating system allows us to reliably recompile most of the modern software that we rely on for the mobile operating system to get the benefits of using real applications instead of just the limited capabilities of mobile apps. For example, programs like databases, webservices, CAD, compilers, image processing can run natively on the phone when you get rid of the Android ...
