Democratizing Future Literacies to Transform the World

Makerspace
Gabriela Agustini
Imagining desirable futures is a way of working to solve social problems and allowing new solutions to emerge in society. In this session, understand actions that have been taken in Brazil, involving the fight against racism, the empowerment of the elderly and other problems that require the construction of new images of the future to be mitigated.
The ability to imagine new futures is increasingly necessary for the transformation of our societies. According to UNESCO, "Democratizing the origins of people’s images of the future opens up new horizons in much the same way that establishing universal reading and writing changes human societies. This is an example of what can be called a ‘change in the conditions of change’. A potent transformation in what people are able to know, imagine and do". In this sense, Olabi, a social organisation based in Brazil, with eight years of experience in democratizing access to the universe of innovation and technology, works for the elderly, black women, people in vulnerable conditions (and others with little space for centers of power) to actively participate in the construction of a society that has equality and diversity as premises. This session will draw on learnings developed by organisations such as 'Learn with a Grandmother', 'PretaLab', among others, which have been developed in Brazil and seek to bring the Global South to the forefront in building the future. The methodologies that make up these projects, the concepts of literacy of the future and how this skill can be stimulated in the most varied contexts, will be part of the essential learning outcomes of the workshop.
