Envisioning distributed food hubs with citizens, Fab Labs & Fab Cities

Workshop Flutgraben
Jessica Guy, Sally Bourdon, Fab Lab Barcelona
Let’s re-imagine our food system. In this workshop, participants will explore how citizens, together with maker spaces, Fab Labs and Fab Cities, can support distributed, social food hubs. Using a future(s) design tool and supporting e-book, we’ll reflect on innovative paths to reclaiming the food system.
Fab Labs and Fab Cities can support the development of food initiatives and design collective visions to re-imagine and co-create the food system. In this workshop, supported by the Distributed Design Platform, participants will use a future design tool and a supporting ebook to explore how to harness makerspaces, Fab Labs or Fab Cities to create a distributed network of social food hubs. This workshop is for citizens who want to reclaim our food system, food innovators who are designing ways to do it and makerspace, Fab Lab or Fab City participants that design spaces to recuperate the food system. The workshop is split into three sections: (1) An introduction to the Food Tech 3.0 Gitbook, a tool on how makerspaces, Fab Labs and Fab Cities can support the development of food initiatives, including tools and best practices for innovators and communities. (2) A creative visioning session in which participants collectively imagine their future, distributed and resilient food system. (3) Sharing visions to discover ways that makerspaces, Fab Labs and Fab Cities can support distributed social food hubs. Citizens and initiatives are fighting to reclaim the food system, bringing us closer towards food citizenship and security. Meanwhile, as spaces to design and prototype bottom-up tech and build capacity in communities, Fab Labs can support the development of open, community-centered and distributed food initiatives while Fab Cities can help envision new realities, employ initiatives and drive policy toward a regenerative and ecosystemic food system. This workshop provides a space for participants to envision a future, distributed, and resilient food system and to explore ways to create social food hubs through Fab Labs and Fab Cities. The workshop is supported by the Distributed Design Platform, an exchange and networking hub for the emerging field of distributed design, and FoodSHIFT2030, a H2020 EU project putting citizens at the center of the food system shift.

At the start of the invasion, our Kyiv cultural community made tank barriers to defend our city. Now we transform them into urban art like benches and bicycle racks. We want to share them with you and have creative instructions on how to upcycle them. Our “hedgehogs” are a reminder of the war and the power of culture to bring about positive change.

Current discussions about future cities are limited to our visual senses. We see many pictures of the future that contain smart infrastructure and new vehicles. But we have more senses. So, how does the future city sound if we put new vehicles on the roads and in the air? Listen in as we experience the city of the future from an angle that you have

There are vast networks of fungi under our feet that have existed for thousands of years; some stretch for thousands of kilometres, connecting trees, plants and other life together in an entangled mesh of mutual support and care. What if our digital social platforms were more like fungi networks?
